Why UV protection matters
Arizona sees intense sunshine for much of the year, and the UV index in Phoenix regularly reaches very high to extreme levels in summer. Over a lifetime, UV exposure is linked to cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium (a growth on the white of the eye) and skin cancers on and around the eyelids. Short, intense exposure can even sunburn the eye's surface.
What to look for in sunglasses
- UV400 or 100% UVA/UVB protection. This is the most important feature. Lens darkness alone tells you nothing about UV protection.
- Polarized lenses to cut glare from pavement, water, windshields and car hoods, which is great for driving and lake days.
- Coverage: larger or wraparound frames block light and dust coming in from the sides.
- Lens color: gray keeps colors natural, while brown and amber boost contrast for golf, hiking and driving.
- Impact resistance for sports and active kids.
Prescription sunglasses
If you wear glasses, prescription sunglasses let you see clearly and protect your eyes at the same time, without clip-ons or squinting. Many of the frames in our optical, including Ray-Ban, Oakley, Maui Jim, Nike and Dragon, can be made with your prescription. Light-adaptive (photochromic) lenses are another option, darkening automatically outdoors.
Don't forget the kids
Children spend lots of time outdoors, and their eyes let more UV light through to the retina than adult eyes do. A pair of well-fitting, UV400 kids' sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat are simple habits that last a lifetime.
Sunglasses and dry eyes
Wraparound sunglasses also shield your eyes from wind and dust, a big help if you struggle with dry eye in Arizona.
Prescription sunglasses are generally FSA and HSA eligible, and vision plans may help cover them too.
