Why the end of the year matters
Many FSA (flexible spending account) plans require you to use your balance by December 31. Some employers offer a short grace period or let you carry over a limited amount, but anything beyond that is usually forfeited. If you have money left in your account, now is the time to check your balance and plan an eye care visit.
HSAs (health savings accounts) work differently: your balance rolls over from year to year. But HSA funds are still a tax-advantaged way to pay for eye care and eyewear you need now.
What eye care is generally FSA and HSA eligible?
- Comprehensive eye exams and contact lens exams
- Prescription eyeglasses, including designer frames and lens upgrades
- Prescription sunglasses
- Contact lenses and contact lens solution
- Medical eye care such as dry eye treatment and visits for eye conditions
- Reading glasses
Non-prescription sunglasses are generally not eligible on their own. Every plan has its own rules, so check with your plan administrator if you're unsure.
Stretch your benefits further
If you also have vision insurance through VSP, EyeMed or Spectera, your plan may include an allowance toward frames and lenses. You can often use your FSA or HSA to cover the remaining balance, upgrade your lenses, or add a second pair such as prescription sunglasses or computer glasses. See how vision insurance covers glasses.
Popular ways patients use year-end funds at our optical:
- A backup pair of glasses in a new style from our designer collection
- Prescription sunglasses from Ray-Ban, Oakley or Maui Jim for Arizona's bright days
- Computer glasses for long screen days
- A year's supply of contact lenses
- Dry eye treatment you've been putting off
Plan ahead for the holiday rush
December is one of the busiest months for eye care offices, as many patients try to use their benefits before they expire. Booking your exam in November or early December gives you time to choose frames and have your glasses ready before the deadline.
We accept FSA and HSA cards, and CareCredit financing is also available.
